Public given voice on Manchester traffic plan

The public are being consulted on a scheme to reduce congestion around the Old Fire Station in Manchester city centre.
The scheme is aimed at helping buses and other traffic flow more freely through the area, and enabling pedestrians to cross the road safely.
Since the new entrance to Piccadilly Rail Station opened, more people are getting on and off buses on London Road in the Old Fire Station area, meaning more buses are stopping on the street, which often causes traffic to build up.
The proposals include new pedestrian crossings, improved and relocated bus stops, bus and cycle lanes, new traffic lights and new road markings.
Councillor Andrew Fender, spokesman for Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: ‘It’s great news that more and more people are using bus services in the area.
‘And as part of our Quality Bus Corridor initiative we are planning to make it much easier and safer for everyone – buses, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians – to travel through the area near the Old Fire Station.’
If local businesses and residents back the scheme, work could start in the summer.
