The Department of Transport will launch a public consultation on interoperable smartcard ticketing at the end of April.
The DfT planned to reveal the framework of a national electronic ticketing strategy which it was currently developing, a conference staged by interoperability standards organisation ITSO was told.
It also plans to use the occasion to flesh out details of proposed changes to the bus service operators grant (BSOG) system, announced by transport secretary, Geoff Hoon, last November.
The aim is to incentivise bus operators to invest in electronic ticketing and GPS-based technology Meanwhile, travel concession authorities taking part in the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme are considering joining forces to delay a 31 December 2009 end-date for the validity of new Mifare Classic1K/4K smartcards, of the type that most use.
ITSO has named the deadline as phase one in a phase-out planned for completion by 31 December 2016.
