Protester’s burning issue

A campaign to stop Sheffield City Council taking waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham for burning in the city's incinerator has been launched.

Protesters are claiming that the council, which boasts Sheffield is the UK's greenest city, will make it the region’s dustbin.

Veolia, which operates the incinerator, has applied for planning permission to annually import 75,000t of domestic waste from the three South Yorkshire towns, but it wants to send 75,000t of commercial waste for landfill in Doncaster.

The three councils recently denied a Channel 4 TV report that they were considering building their own incinerator.
