Protective measures taken after latest Ribbon development

Herefordshire Council has started work to preserve an ancient archaeological find uncovered when work began on the Rotherwas relief road.

Work on the scheme has been halted since the discovery of the Bronze Age ‘Rotherwas Ribbon’. Contractors have pumped standing flood water from land surrounding the site and are preparing to apply the first few layers of protection.

Current preparatory work involves the diversion of two land drains, away from the site, which is being carried out without excavation or disturbance to the Ribbon.

When the site is stabilised, a number of protective, weatherproof layers will be put over the site, including a chemically-resistant geo-textile layer, a layer of clean sharp sand, a further geo-grid and then capping material. The Rotherwas Ribbon, a Bronze Age track way of fire-cracked stones, was discovered in April, during preparation for the relief road.
