Project could make world of difference

Southampton City Council has commissioned a carbon footprint project at the city’s university which the authority claims could be rolled out by councils worldwide.

The council has assigned climate change experts at the University of Southampton to conduct an accurate snapshot of the city’s carbon emissions, in a three-year study.

The £55,000 project will produce a scientific model to enable the authority to slash its carbon footprint. According to Southampton, this could be then applied to any town or city in the world.

Cllr Matt Dean, cabinet member for environment, said: ‘This project will allow us to look at the areas of the city where carbon emissions are high.

‘We can then target those areas and businesses to help them slash their carbon emissions. The data will also be used to determine the environmental impact of future developments and policy decisions.’
