Progress on South East regional transport body

Talks are progressing over a potential sub-national transport body (STB) for the south east of England, and Transport Network can now reveal the nascent group would run from Kent to Hampshire and north to Berkshire.

President of the council directors' body ADEPT, and director of communities, economy and transport for East Sussex County Council,  Rupert Clubb, told Transport Network that ‘all the local authorities in that area are behind the benefits that a sub-national transport body could bring’.

Mr Clubb, who is helping lead the talks, highlighted the importance of speaking with one voice at a regional level and added it was a 'massive opportunity’ region.

‘We are bringing together parties to talk about governance arrangements, a possible constitution, and most importantly how we can help the end user,’ he said.

He also added that the group has had ‘initial conversations with Transport for London’, which would form a key partner for the commuter area.

Mr Clubb said the group would not try to reinvent the wheel but would work in ‘a structured way’ and was likely to bring together existing documents, plans and strategies at first so as to utilise the existing knowledge and ideas among the local authorities.
