Probe will question if Humber crossing hike is taking its toll

Research has been launched into the impact of Humber Bridge tolls on the prosperity, employment and future growth prospects on either side of the crossing.

Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire councils will meet the £60,000 cost of the research. Colin Buchanan and Partners, which provided the economic case for Crossrail, and produced the models for Edinburgh Tram, will conduct the research.

Once completed – around September – the councils hope the research will provide evidence to lobby for the abolition or significant reduction in the tolls.

Cllr Carl Minns, leader of Hull City Council, said the tolls had a negative impact on the local economy. ‘We need to work together for a more prosperous future for the region, and I hope this research will show the Government that change is needed.’

Cllr Mark Kirk, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said the Government would not change its position on the tolls without quality research showing the real impact the tolls were having. ‘I’m desperate that we get on with this,’ he added.
