Price is steep but Cumbria must resurface Lake District pass

Cumbria County Council is to spend £200,000 resurfacing stretches of one of Britain's highest roads.

At 454m, the A592 Kirkstone Pass Road is the highest road pass in the Lake District, with gradients of one in four along its winding route between the A591, near Windermere, and the shores of Ullswater.

The council was to start work on reconstructing two stretches of carriageway at the Windermere end of the road from Monday 29 October. Special arrangements have been made for school buses to pass during the road closure, and emergency vehicles will be allowed through.
