Preparations pave the way for guided bus

Construction plans for the £116.2M Cambridgeshire Guided Busway are underway, with work set to begin in January 2007.
The busway will run along a 25km disused railway line route that is fully detached from busy local roads. Cambridgeshire contractor, Edmund Nuttall, is establishing its main site offices in the Cambridgeshire village of Longstanton, where the new 700-space Guided Busway Park & Ride site will be located.
Funded by the Department for Transport  and local developers, the busway will link new housing developments, including Cambridgeshire's proposed new town, Northstowe, as well as existing villages and key areas such as Cambridge Science Park and Addenbrooke’s hospital. When completed, it will be the longest guided busway in the world.
However, environmental groups warn of the threat to populations of protected species and damage caused by the clearance of established flora and fauna.
