Portal development will open bus lanes to freight carriers

Bus lanes in Norwich are to be opened on a permanent basis to low-emission lorries operating from a nearby freight consolidation centre.

A spokesman for Norfolk CC said the vehicles infrequently used the bus lane along Newmarket Road, only doing so when the main route was congested.

He said: ‘But the aim is to increase the number of the vehicles coming into the centre, as it would mean less larger HGVs on the roads.’

He added that cyclists could use an off-road cycle lane on the other side of the road, should they have concerns. ‘But they are used to buses, which come more frequently.’
