Porsche to challenge Ken’s £25 congestion hike

Porsche is to challenge Ken Livingstone’s plans to charge £25 a day for high-emission vehicles entering London’s congestion zone.

The luxury car-maker said it would be writing to the London mayor this week, and would wait two weeks for a response. ‘If the mayor fails to respond to Porsche’s letter or refuses to reconsider his plans, Porsche intends formally to submit its application for judicial review at the Royal Courts of Justice,’ the company said in a statement.

Andy Goss, managing director of Porsche Cars GB, said: ‘A massive congestion charge increase is quite simply unjust. Thousands of car-owners driving a huge range of cars will be hit by a disproportionate tax, which it is clear, will have a very limited effect on CO2 emissions.’

But Livingstone said: ‘Londoners should decide about their city’s air quality and what sort of cars they want in it. The idea that a German businessman who earns £50M a year should intervene to prevent Londoners making that choice is obscene.’

He said only one of Porsche’s cars would be able to drive inside the zone without incurring a £25 charge. The increased charge comes into effect on 27 October.
