Pooling to handle waste

South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse are pooling their resources to look for new waste-management and street-cleaning contracts covering the two district councils.

South Oxfordshire’s current contracts, with Grundon, Verdant and Cannon, are due to expire in June next year, and the Vale of White Horse contract with Veolia is due to expire in October 2010.

The new contracts will include street cleaning, rubbish and recycling collections, including separate food waste. Senior council officers hope to announce a decision on the preferred contractor by the end of this year.

The two districts already share a joint contract with Capita to provide revenues and benefits services, which will produce savings of around £3M over 10 years.
