Poole fears resources for concessionary scheme could dry up

The Borough of Poole Council fears a major funding crisis when the nationwide concessionary bus fare scheme is introduced next year, unless the Government substantially increases the funding for reimbursing bus companies.
The council has run its ‘Connect’ concessionary fares scheme since 2001, but from 1 April 2008 it will be eligible to passengers from outside the borough. Although additional government provision of up to £250M from 2008/09 has been allocated to meet the additional costs of the scheme, Poole is concerned about the fair distribution of this funding. The borough has a high number of older residents, with approximately 26% aged 60 or over.
However, the council says this year’s allocation of £800,000 left a shortfall of around £500,000 – an additional burden on local council tax.
