Polluters put in the picture

Transport for London has trialled new pollution cameras which can detect levels of harmful vehicle emissions.

TfL says it is considering using the cameras for monitoring levels in the new low-emission zone, which is due to start in February next year, but not for enforcement.

‘A small trial has been undertaken of devices which measure pollutant emissions from vehicles, the results of which have been provided to TfL,’ said a spokesman.

‘We are studying these results, and if these devices provide robust data, we will look at piloting them for emissions monitoring for the low-emission zone. However, we will not be using these devices to enforce the LEZ.’
