Police will teach Essex school-run parents a lesson

Lazy school-run drivers in Thurrock, Essex, have been warned that their cars will be towed away if they continue to cause parking chaos.

Police say they have been forced to take drastic action and remove offending vehicles from outside schools because drivers are failing to park sensibly, despite adequate free parking nearby.

Inspector Rachel Wood, the area police commander, said officers had resorted to towing because they feared a serious accident could be caused by ‘bloody-minded and inconsiderate’ parents clogging up the roads. ‘On some occasions, streets with cars parked on either side have been blocked by people leaving large vehicles in the middle of the road,’ said Insp Wood.

‘Free and safer parking areas are available nearby, but it seems that many people are not prepared to walk, and insist on stopping as near as possible to the schools.’ The problems have been getting worse, despite letters being sent to parents, and the police speaking to certain drivers.

Rob McCulloch-Graham, Thurrock Council’s corporate director of children, education and families, said: ‘The no-parking areas are clearly marked and schools have all issued instructions about dropping off and picking up children from their school.

‘Five minutes’ walk is not much to ask, and we welcome the police’s action here.’ Drivers are being given a warning lasting 12 months. If the driver or the vehicle commits another breach of the act, then the vehicle can be seized and towed away by police, incurring a towing and storage fee.
