Police interview ex-GMPTA chair over election claim

Detectives from Greater Manchester Police have interviewed the former chairman of the GMPTA about his defeat as a Salford councillor in the May local elections.

Roger Jones, who lost the seat he had held for the last 25 years, was visited at his home by officers who said they were investigating a complaint against property company, Peel Holdings, under the Representation of the People’s Act.

The force is liaising with the special casework directorate of the Crown Prosecution Service. Before the election, the PTA referred the behaviour of congestion charge opponent Peel Holdings to the commission, claiming the giant property company targeted Jones, who was one of the leaders of a bid to bring road pricing to the area and failed to win re-election in Salford’s Irlam ward.

The PTA was told of claims that Peel’s property director, Mike Butterworth, told Jones’ political opponents that Peel would release a telephone survey of 300 voters by market research firm, Aspect, which showed 60% of people who voted for him at the last election would vote against him if congestion charging was introduced.
