Plymouth trucks replaced in efficiency drive

Plymouth’s ageing fleet of refuse trucks is to be replaced as part of an improvement programme designed to transform the city’s waste operation into a ‘greener’ outfit.

The new fleet will be tailor-made to suit the specific needs of the city, with its high number of back lanes with tight access and abundance of hills.

The fleet will have four different-sized vehicles which will be allocated to new zones across the city in 2008. The zones will enable smaller vehicles to feed back into the larger vehicles to keep tip runs down.

The changes will also enable the council to further improve its recycling rounds, including the possible expansion of the garden waste collection across the whole of the city, and possible kerbside glass recycling.

Cll Michael Leaves, cabinet member for streetscene and environmental regulation, said: ‘We are investing to save money as well as make rounds more efficient and provide more recycling.’
