Plymouth signs deal for roads overhaul

Plymouth City Council has signed a £150M deal with Amey to overhaul its highways services.

The 10-year contract is expected to make the council savings of £6.2M, with a further potential saving of £5.6M if best practice construction principles are successful.

Amey will carry out design and maintenance work on behalf of the council and take on day-to-day responsibilities such as filling in potholes, urban traffic control and highway drainage.

However, the council will still be ultimately responsible for highways.

The new Amey highways team will be based alongside the council’s existing transport teams for the first four years of the contract.

It is hoped the new arrangement will increase productivity, reduce accidents and defects, and cut down on capital cost and construction time.
