Plymouth residents urged to double recycling efforts

Plymouth City Council is urging its residents to double their recycling and composting efforts after closing the city’s landfill site this week.

Non-recycable household waste will now be transported more than 20 miles to a commercial landfill site near Liskeard, Cornwall, by Viridor Waste Management, which was awarded the seven-year waste disposal contract.

The city’s landfill site, Chelson Meadow, has become a ‘land mountain, which cannot grow any higher’, according to Cllr Michael Leaves, the council’s cabinet member for streetscene and environmental regulation.

‘This is not just about being green, it’s about how much it will cost us financially,’ he added. ‘If we do not recycle more, we will end up paying significantly higher council tax to pay for the fines we could face as well as the price we have to pay landfill.’

The council is working with Devon County Council and Torbay Council to come up with a joint project which could include an energy-from-waste facility.
