Pledge signals new direction for Welsh road strategy

The Welsh Assembly Government has vowed to invest in north-south road links and to tackle pinch-points affecting the M4 and A55 east-west routes.

Transport minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, said investment in north-south links would be ‘significantly greater’ than the £50M committed in the One Wales document. ‘Improving transport links throughout Wales will make our economy more competitive and bring the people of our nation closer together,’ he said.

The key priority was to develop a network which struck a balance between the nation’s economic, social and environmental objectives, recognising the distinctive needs of different parts of Wales, rural communities as well as urban centres, he added.

He also announced a new Sustainable Travel Towns initiative, which would enable a number of towns to become exemplars in terms of sustainable travel, with greatly enhanced opportunities for walking and cycling, improved public transport and better travel planning.

In addition, Wyn Jones launched the Welsh Freight Strategy consultation to promote an efficient and environmentally-sustainable freight transport system in Wales. The consultation was produced by the Welsh Freight Group, a body set up to inform the Welsh Assembly on ways of developing a sustainable freight infrastructure in the principality.

The aim of the consultation is to provide a freight strategy which will deliver a modern, efficient freight transport system in keeping with the aims and objectives of One Wales. Wyn Jones said: ‘The aim of the Wales Freight Strategy is to promote an efficient, effective and environmentally-sustainable freight transport system to support a growing economy. ‘Effective transport links are critical in ensuring the successful movement of freight and a modern and vibrant freight network is essential in making Wales an attractive place to do business.’
