Planning: Water-based solution to clear Gloucester of congestion

A plan to increase use of public transport and reduce city centre traffic is key to a new 1,000-home development in Gloucester. The aim of developer Peel Holdings for the £200M Gloucester Quays project is to create a quayside development with waterfront apartments, shops and cafes. While pedestrian routes along the canal and quayside would be enhanced and the Bakers Quay area pedestrianised, major city centre traffic routes would be downgraded. Peel Holdings would contribute an undisclosed sum to secure the long-planned completion of the inner-relief road by building a new canal bridge which, together with the southwest bypass, is designed to take traffic out of Gloucester city centre.
