Planning permission to develop 36 facilities under Greater Manchester’s £3.8bn waste-management contract has been secured.
Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) has secured the planning applications for reconstruction and redevelopment of 23 sites for 36 facilities across the region. The 25-year private-finance initiative (PFI) waste and recycling contract is the largest in western Europe.
All facilities will be completed by 2012, and will reduce waste diverted to landfill by 75%, enabling the authority to recycle and compost at least 50% of all waste.
Cllr Neil Swannick, chair of GMWDA, said: ‘We are delighted to have secured all 23 planning applications for our facilities. This is an incredible success. It shows strong commitment and excellent partnership.’
GMWDA provides waste disposal services for 973,000 households in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.
