Plan finds a Way to improve island safety

The Canvey Island Improvement Plan will be implemented this summer, following a public consultation.

The proposals include a reduction of the speed limit to 50mph on Canvey Way – the main access point to Canvey Island – the first averaging speed cameras (SPECS) in Essex, the installation of chev-rons, and the closure of all lay-bys on the route. Road safety has been identified as the main issue causing congestion.

The introduction of the reduced speed limit is dependent on delivery of the SPECS cameras, which is anticipated in early 2009.

Essex County Council also announced it will be conducting a feasibility study of a third access route to the island.

Cllr Norman Hume, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: ‘There are formidable hurdles, such as cost and environmental concerns, but I am determined to make the strongest-possible case for a third access which would provide significant economic benefits to both Canvey Island residents and the road network in the region.’
