Pitt urged to undertake more wetlands research

Sir Michael Pitt has been urged to undertake further research into the positive impact that wetlands have on flood retention.

There has been a call on Sir Michael to look further before concluding that wetlands and land management could only have limited effects on flood retention. Rob McInnes, head of wetland conservation for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), said:

‘Those who work on the ground know that changes in land management are resulting in much greater run-off of rain that is exacerbating the flooding we are experiencing.’

Wetland professionals are calling for more research into existing projects which manage land to reduce the severity of flooding. Such projects include upland and floodplain management, overseeing temporary washlands, and the creation of urban wetland areas.
