Pioneers share success

 
Ashford’s pioneering shared space scheme is showing ‘encouraging’ early results in reducing traffic speeds and accidents.


Ben Hamilton-Baillie, leading shared space consultant, said no serious incidents had been reported in the five months since the scheme opened, although he warned it was still too early to judge.


In the three years preceding the scheme, there had been an average of 24 crashes a year.


Reductions in traffic speed are close to target, with the average speed westbound on the Elwick Road 21mph. He said an increasing number of highway authorities were expressing interest in shared space, ‘realising that things are changing fast’..
