Pilot towns chosen to fight illegal advertising

Six towns across the country have been chosen to take part in a research drive aimed at cracking down on illegal advertising.
Bolton, Tameside, Stockport, Chester, St Albans and Chelmsford will all participate in the schemes, which range from clearing away flyposting sites to slashing the amount of illegal trailer advertising alongside motorways and main roads. The initiative is part of a bid to clean up areas and make advertisers toe the line.
The pilot, being run by the Department of Communities and Local Government, aims to set up a national database of key prosecutions of firms breaking the rules, to use as a resource to help councils strengthen their arguments in court.
Bolton council planning committee chairman, Nick Peel, said more than 30 councils had lodged bids to become involved with the initiative.
