Pilot gives members opportunity to spend allocation ‘their way’

A number of streetscene projects have been confirmed under a ground-breaking scheme in Northamptonshire to give individual councillors direct powers of investment.
Under the Empowering Councillors pilot trial in Kettering, 10 county councillors have been awarded £10,000 each to invest in their local communities this year. The projects announced so far include a new vehicle-activated sign (£7,500) to address residents’ concerns over a road bend; four waste bins and four seats (£4,100) in the public park in the Rothwell ward of Kettering; and the replacement of pedestrian pathway fencing (£600).
Council leader, Jim Harker, said, ‘When it comes to understanding the priorities of different communities, councillors are the key. That’s why this is about much more than simply allocating money. It is about developing the council’s role as a community leader, making all councillors frontline influencers in the work of the council.’
The money from the project can be used to improve maintenance of roads, enhance the local environment, or support community projects or individuals.
All 10 county councillors in Kettering are participating in the scheme, which – if successful – will be rolled out across the county.
