Pictures of litter offenders put on council website

A council has taken a hard-line on people who have been filmed dropping litter in their city centre by publishing seven images of alleged offenders on their website.
Peterborough City Council is publishing pictures of offenders and asking residents to call a hotline number to identify them, after which they could face a fine of up to £75. The city council published three images originally in September and decided to release another collection this month.
Of the original three, two have been identified and one was issued with a fixed penalty notice. Investigations are continuing into the third.
The scheme involves CCTV operators recording any examples of littering in the city before issuing an image of the suspected offender for publication.
A reference number along with the time and date the alleged offence took place has been attributed to each image published on the council’s homepage.
Graham Murphy, cabinet member for environment and community safety, said: ‘The publication of these images should act as a warning to people the city council is determined to curb anti-social behaviour.
The scheme, which employs 135 of the city’s CCTV cameras, aims to slash the £1.65M the authority spent last year clearing up city centre refuse.
