Past collides with present day as restorers get to work

Renfrewshire Council is to spend £1.5M to strengthen the 140-year-old Abbey Bridge in Paisley.

The move is part of the authority’s plan to restore the town’s Victorian heritage. The work, lasting 12 months, will see new parapets and railings on the crossing.

Peter Low, Renfrewshire Council’s principal engineer, said: ‘When the Abbey Bridge was originally built, it was designed to take horses and carriages.

‘We’re now looking at ways of making sure the parapet can withstand a collision from a 40t lorry.’ The prototype castings on the B-listed bridge are being made by the Ballantine Bo’ness Iron Company, which has carried out similar work for London’s Westminster Bridge.
