Passengers clamour for Fastrack

Work is under way to expand Kent Thameside’s new Fastrack busway, which has attracted more than twice as many passengers as expected.
Three further sections of busway and priority lanes are under construction, including a new route as part of The Bridge mixed-use regeneration project in the Thames Gateway.
The project will see a 264-acre brownfield site transformed into a new community.
Fastrack will link all areas of The Bridge, taking residents into Dartford town centre, to local railway stations and local amenities such as Darent Valley Hospital and Bluewater shopping centre. The route will be operational before the homes are occupied in 2007.
A report by the Fastrack Delivery Executive not only reveals passenger numbers have exceeded expectations since the busway opened earlier this year, but people are also being encouraged to leave their cars at home.
The Fastrack bus service recently came under fire from the London Assembly (Surveyor, 14 September) over concerns it would not ease congestion and lure passengers from their cars. The assembly dismissed the services as a ‘glorified bus service’, warning that too many stops had been added and the route was inadequately segregated from other road-uses.
Meanwhile, Hampshire County Council has formally abandoned its plans for a rapid-transit system, ‘which would have taken three million car journeys off the road each year’. Blaming the Government, council leader, Ken Thornber, said: ‘We did all we could to meet its demands but it [the Government] has not only let us down but also the 76,500 people who live in Gosport.’
