Parking: Latest pay-and-display machines unveiled to drive London efficiency

The next generation of parking pay-and-display machines is being trialled on London’s streets as part of an initiative to generate efficiency savings and improve service to drivers. Six local authorities are evaluating the technology of three suppliers in the ‘partnership for parking’ trial. They will sign a framework contract with the chosen supplier, and invite other boroughs to join. A standard, state-of-the-art payment terminal should help drivers and reduce councils’ purchasing and maintenance costs. Central London’s authorities are also working to standardise their administrative processes, documentation and stationery, and use of bailiffs. The London Centre of Excellence is providing £550,000 for the two-year PfP project. Westminster City Council is leading the initiative for partners Islington, Kensington & Chelsea, Camden, Lambeth and City of London. Thirty-three pay-and-display machines, supplied by Parkeon, Solari and Zeag, are being evaluated in the six-month trial. They are the first in the UK to accept credit card payment via chip & PIN modules. The required specification also includes solar power and wi-fi communications. Developing standardised machines would tackle ‘one of the complaints motorists make about parking in London – that it is confusing to have different payment methods and machines across boroughs,’ according to a PfP spokesman.
