Parking: ALG hails drop in appeals as proof of improvement

A drop in the number of parking appeals by London motorists last year shows boroughs are improving their enforcement performance, according to local government leaders.
The Association of London Government last week revealed that parking appeals lodged in the year to April 2006 fell by 12% to just over 48,200. Motorists’ success rate also fell – to 56% from 61% in 2004/05.
Figures for the number of penalty charge notices issued by boroughs are not due from the ALG until next month. But Nick Lester, director of its transport & environment committee, said these would confirm that appeal rates were also down.
‘Boroughs are performing better,’ he told Surveyor. But a reduction in the negative publicity surrounding parking enforcement in the capital, compared with the year before, may also have played a part by weakening drivers’ propensity to appeal.
The figures were compiled by the independent Parking and Traffic Appeals Service.
