Park-and-ride offered free to cut rush-hour traffic

Warwickshire County Council is to offer the Stratford park-and-ride service for free to commuters travelling before 9am.
The free service will be launched from 2 July, in a bid to cut congestion and improve the environment in the town centre. The council estimates a commuter could save more than £100 a month, based on paying in a long-stay car park every day. After 9am, a £1.30 return fare will be payable for each adult travelling, and up to two children travel free with each fare payer.
The Stratford site saw a 23% increase in passenger numbers this Easter compared with last year, but buses remain ‘practically empty’ during commuter hours, meaning the free service will not cost the council any extra. Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: ‘Clearly, getting people on to the Stratford park-and-ride in the morning rush hour will help tackle congestion and cut the environmental impact. Cars are at their most polluting when sitting in traffic, and Stratford gives a realistic alternative.’ Stratford park-and-ride forms a key element of Warwickshire’s local transport plan.
