Overgrown footpaths land Staffordshire CC with £30,000 in extra costs

Staffordshire County Council has incurred extra costs of £30,000 so far this year due to problems of overgrown footpaths caused by the warm spring and wet summer.

Noreen Moore, countryside and rights of way group leader, said the ‘freakish’ weather had led to 945 reports of obstructed footpaths in the first four months of 2007/08 alone. Usually the county receives 1,200 reports a year.

As well as leading to the overspend on the £150,000 countryside service budget, the deluges of June and July made it ‘exceptionally difficult’ for maintenance teams to gain access, she said.
