Out of town centres could be retailers’ best option

Retailers are considering the pros and cons of setting up out-of-town freight-consolidation centres, to cut lorry traffic within urban centres.

Bristol City Council had difficulty in convincing retailers, especially smaller traders, to contribute funds towards a freight consolidation centre, set up in 2004, to take consignments for shops in the city’s Broadmead Centre.

But there is now hope that retailers will take a more positive line after retail property group, BCSC, launched a study to investigate both the ‘advantages and disadvantages of such centres’.

Kate Logan, research manager at BCSC, said: ‘Freight-consolidation centres may offer a way to reduce our carbon footprint while freeing up considerable amounts of city centre retail space.’
