Online journey planner will enable cyclists to route out best run

Local authorities are being urged to sign up to a scheme to create the first UK-wide, online journey planner for cyclists.

The Cycle Journey Planner will enable cyclists throughout the UK to plan their routes at the click of a mouse. The Cycling England initiative is endorsed by the Department for Transport.

Local authorities which sign up to the scheme will receive match-funding, advice and support from Cycling England to gather the cycle route data, at a fraction of the cost of a cycle audit.

The data will give local authorities an accurate record of all cycling infrastructure, plus a network of suggested routes. This will help local authorities deliver key transport objectives, including school and workplace travel planning, as well as efficiently manage their cycle infrastructure assets. Cycling England is aiming to cover all England’s urban centres by 2012.

Interested local authorities should contact Jo Cleary on jo.cleary@cyclingengland.co.uk, or call 015395 30134.
