Olympic logistics could restore the River Lea as the ‘heartland of waterborne freight movement’, British Waterways regeneration manager, Richard Rutter, has said.
He announced a 10 October start on barge trials at the new Prescott Lock in West Ham.
Through this, 350t barges will feed the Olympic site with 8,000t a day of construction materials, contributing to 50% sustainability targets.
Wider improvements, aimed at long-term shifting of freight from northeast London roads, include water-rail transhipment at Bow, and dredging the northern Lea for 150t barges, each replacing seven lorries. Traffic signals and CCTV will control flows.
