Olympic team races to defend itself in row with Commons

The Olympic Delivery Authority has rejected claims by the House of Commons transport select committee that its draft transport plans were vague and under- developed.
The committee criticised the ODA’s transport plans for the 2012 Olympics in February, saying they lacked urgency and demanded more details from the developers of the games’ infrastructure. In its formal response to the committee, the ODA said: ‘We are well placed at this long distance in time from 2012 in the development and delivery of the overall transport plan’.
The ODA also claimed it was ‘fully engaged’ with supporters, promoters and deliverers of walking and cycling opportunities in the UK, and was working to ensure they played a key role in the ‘overall transport matrix for the games’. ‘We believe we can reassure the committee that of the projects listed, thorough project and programme-management systems are in place, and the ODA and our partners are managing statutory requirements, governance, safety, health, environmental and quality issues, for which systems are also in place at the level appropriate to each project at this stage.’
The ODA addresses each of the concerns highlighted by the committee, outlining what had been achieved, and what work is still to be done. Some 22 of the 55 extra carriages needed for expansion of the Docklands Light Railway system are already being built, and tenders for infrastructure work at 17 stations have already been returned. Studies are planned to gauge demand for river services from spectators and the workforce during the Olympics, and agreeing ‘optimum strategies’ and locations for a park-and-ride scheme. The ODA has also said it is examining how transport demand changes by geographical area and by specific public transport modes.
