Old Albert is a cause of concern for royal borough’s engineers

London’s 19th century Albert Bridge is undergoing a detailed design study to secure its future.

The Royal London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea is carrying out a review of the landmark bridge to ensure it can cope with the weight and volume of today’s traffic.

The study aims to explore the engineering challenges faced in restoring the bridge, and safeguarding its future.

Deputy leader, Cllr Daniel Moylan, said: ‘The bridge was built for the horse and carriage but years of use by cars and lorries has taken a toll. ‘We have installed low-level barriers on the bridge to protect it from further damage – and this does affect the appearance of the bridge – but it is a necessary evil.’
