Obituary: Lord Bruce-Lockhart loses long battle against cancer

Former Local Government Association chairman, Lord Bruce-Lockhart, died last week, following a long battle with cancer.

Lord Bruce-Lockhart spent a decade as one of the country’s top local politicians, as leader of Kent County Council from 1997 until 2005, and chairman of the LGA from 2004 to 2007.

He is credited with leading the transformation and improvement of local government, and enhancing the reputation of the sector in Whitehall and among the public.

Born in 1942 in Wakefield, Lord Bruce-Lockhart trained at agricultural college before travelling to Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe – and Australia to work in farming.

He returned to the UK in 1968, where he ran fruit farms. Lord Bruce-Lockhart only came to politics in 1989, when he launched a protest against the Channel Tunnel rail link.

He was knighted in 2002, and appointed chair of English Heritage in 2007.
