Not fine to flout waste rules

Councils in Northern Ireland can now issue £100 fixed-penalty notices to homeowners flouting waste rules.

Environment minister, Arlene Foster, announced the powers for the province’s district councils last week. Offences such as putting the wrong materials in recycling receptacles would incur a fine.

The councils are free to decide whether they would like to adopt the system or not. Foster said the powers would be a quicker, more flexible and cheaper way to deal with low level problems. She also hoped it would help increase recycling rates.
