Northwest hit hardest as wintery storms blow in

Severe weather caused road closures and minor accidents this week, with more hazardous conditions predicted as Surveyor went to press.

The Northwest was worst affected, with up to 4in (10cm) of snow falling in some areas. There were lengthy delays on motorways around Manchester and the M74 connecting England and Scotland, and cars were abandoned on gridlocked routes through Lancashire on Wednesday.

Bury Metropolitan Council, which was badly hit, said its area street care teams were focusing on gritting activities to clear as many residential streets and main pedestrian areas as possible.

Additionally, piles of grit were being made available at the roadside, particularly in the north of the borough. North Yorkshire Council said all its available gritters were out dealing with the conditions. All main roads were clear and priority minor roads were being re-treated, it said.
