The winning design for Blackpool’s new £21M ‘People’s Playground’ promenade has been announced by ReBlackpool, the company responsible for regeneration of the seaside resort.
LDA Design has been chosen as winner of an international design competition to develop the project, which aims to transform Blackpool’s central seafront into a year-round, urban park, and optimise use of the beach. The winning concept provides a vision for the redevelopment of the sea walls and construction of six new headlands, which pays homage to Blackpool’s history, as well as placing the resort on a modern world stage. Robert Aspland, associate director of LDA Design, commented: ‘We have created an incredible surreal dunescape which will become a playground for all. At dusk, a virtual landscape will emerge from the dunes and high above this, a spectacular and unique aerial light show will be created – “the Northern Lights.”’
