Northamptonshire in a Buzz over bus use rise

The number of bus journeys taken in Northamptonshire increased by more than one million last year, in the fourth consecutive annual rise since 2003/04.
Figures released by Northamptonshire County Council show bus passengers made more than 19M journeys in the county in 2006/07, representing an increase of 1.16M on the previous year and 3.5M since 2003/04.
The council attributes the upturn to improvements to bus services and facilities, as well as initiative to help regular bus-users, such as the Northampton Buzz card scheme and concessionary bus fare scheme for pensioners. It has also worked with bus operators to provide low floor buses on many routes.
The latest quarterly bus and light rail statistics show patronage rose slightly in non-metropolitan areas between January and March.
