Northampton clean-up gangs face the chop

Northampton may cut back on street cleaning and graffiti-removal services if local residents oppose an increase in council tax.
Residents are being consulted on how the council should address an estimated budget shortfall of £3.15M. Options include raising council tax, cutbacks on graffiti removal and street-cleaning services, reducing grants, and further centralising customer services. The council claims higher-than-expected take-up of the concessionary fare scheme for older and disabled people has cost almost £1M more than predicted, while large increases in energy and fuel prices have also taken their toll.
The council has also initiated a major drive for increased efficiency and value for money to help reduce other costs.
This includes sharing costs with other councils through more efficient partnership working and utilising technology to better effect.
