An ultra-bright belisha beacon, designed to reduce accidents at zebra crossings, is being trialled in Norfolk.
The patent-pending Zebrite has LED lights in an enhanced backing plate which flash in phase with the globe, improving the crossings’ conspicuity, according to the manufacturer. The design ‘targets light at the motorist and actively reduces light spillage, removing the need for unsightly cowls,’ it adds.
LED technology cuts energy consumption to less than one-fifth of traditional beacons, and 10 crossings can be retrofitted for the cost of a signal-controlled crossing. Two sites are involved in the three-month trial.
Norwich and
Essex councils are also said to be interested.
