No toll taken as Kilburn bridge works get underway over the holidays

The 158-year-old cast iron Kilburn High Road road-over-rail bridge was demolished over the May bank holiday weekend.
The £7.3M Camden council-Network Rail project, involved three cranes and more than 100 engineers in the removal of some 2,000 tonnes of material, which was completed over the weekend.
Following the demolition, 54 sections making up the new bridge structure were lifted into place piece-by-piece.
The reconstruction work was essential to remove the need for future weight restrictions, which would have stopped buses and heavy goods vehicles from using the A5 aterial route into London’s West End.
The council is aiming to add no more than 10 minutes to the journeys of eight diverted bus routes during the closure for the 32-week project (Surveyor, 18 May).
