No shelter for vandals as county gets tough with crime

Cheshire County Council is calling its micro CCTV project in six bus shelters a success, after two prosecutions for vandalism.
A special presentation took place at the end of last week to assess the scheme, now that it has reached its halfway point of six months.
Footage has already led to two prosecutions and separately, a police caution. The council’s executive awarded the contract to Vetatech, which also monitors up to eight cameras at the six locations.
The cost to install and monitor the cameras at all the bus stops is costing the authority £16,500 for the year-long trial.
John Burke, executive member for highways and transportation, said: ‘Within only a few weeks, the CCTV system proved its worth by capturing vivid images of criminal damage taking place at two of the shelters.’
