No idling as bus warden scheme expands

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is expanding its bus wardens scheme to make sure passengers get the best levels of service from operators.

Together with existing schemes currently operating in Paisley and South Lanarkshire, SPT’s inspectors have now started work on behalf of East Renfrewshire Council and the traffic commissioner for Scotland, to ensure bus companies comply with industry regulations.

The SPT will target cowboy operators over issues such as timetable, clear information and traffic regulations.

They will also clamp down on bus idling by moving buses on, or insisting drivers switch off their engines if they have been stationary for longer than two minutes. The warden’s findings will be reported to the traffic commissioner, who has the powers to fine operators for non-compliance and, ultimately, to withdraw licences.

Since the bus wardens began operating in Paisley in November, they have moved on 1,040 buses found sitting at bus stops longer than they should have. They have also recorded 173 instances of buses not displaying the correct information, and moved on 228 buses parked illegally at bus stops. The traffic commissioner of Scotland, Joan Aitken, praised SPT for giving priority to Strathclyde’s bus-users.

She said: ‘More people depend on bus travel in Strathclyde than any other area of Scotland. Passengers need to know that the bus will turn up when it is meant to, and in a safe and pleasant condition. ‘I want bus passengers to know who is running their bus, where it is going, that it is safe to get on, and that it will run on time.’
