No hold-ups for works to bolster cutting and prevent falling rocks

Drilling and blasting operations to improve safety on the A5 in North Wales have been completed four weeks ahead of schedule.
The 1km-stretch of the trunk road at Ty Nant was closed last May over fears falling rocks could injure or kill motorists heading for the coast (Surveyor, 1 June 2006). Five of the 500 or so anchorages holding back the sides of the 31m-deep cutting near Corwen had failed, and a further 18 were overloaded. The stretch of road was subsequently closed, but Transport Wales now expects it to be reopened in late June.
The removal of blasted and excavated rock from the site continues, with several thousand tonnes of the excavated rock being processed into acceptable material for use in other Transport Wales maintenance schemes. Reinstatement works are now in progress, including reinstatement of drainage and safety fences, and reinstallation of the previously-diverted BT fibre-optic cables.
The existing traffic management through the old A5 ‘Glyn Bends’ route will be maintained until completion of the works through the cutting.
